What Is A Theriogenologist?

A theriogenologist is a veterinarian who is an expert in the area of reproduction.  This means that the individual has successfully completed a clinical training program (residency) comprised of three to six additional years of training beyond the DVM degree.  A board certified theriogenologist has successfully passed an extremely difficult examination administered once a year by the College of Theriogenology.  Even after completing the training program, only about 1/4th to 1/3rd of the candidates successfully pass the exam each year when it is given, and it is not uncommon to have to take it two and three times to pass.  After one passes the exam, one is conferred "Diplomate" status and he or she also becomes a member of the college.  There are about 500 diplomates in the College of Theriogenology.  This is the total number since it's inception.  Actively practicing diplomates number far fewer.

Dr. Jane Barber recently opened a referral practice, Veterinary Specialties at the Lake, in the Piedmont region of North Carolina.  Dr. Jane received her DVM from the University of Georgia.  After 5 years in general practice, she returned to UGA to complete a MS degree and residency training program in Veterinary Behavior.  After completing her behavior training, Dr. Jane entered a combined PhD and residency training program in theriogenology at the University of Minnesota.  She is board certified in theriogenology and is a Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists.  Dr. Jane is certified to perform PennHIP radiographs in addition to standard OFA films for hip evaluation.  And she is a strong proponent of natural nutrition and energy  medicine.  She can be reached  by email at:  drjanebarber@aol.com.
